Why merchants switch
Evidence Stripe never sees
Smart Disputes builds its packet from what Stripe holds about the payment and the customer, and you can add your own evidence only if you step in [SD3]. Stripe’s own setup guide says “The more transaction and customer data available to Stripe, the stronger your evidence packets are.” [SD4]. A dispute that turns on a signed agreement, a usage log or an email thread with the customer turns on records Stripe never had. We write the response around those records and the reason code, and address it to the bank deciding the case.
Days to spare, not minutes
If nobody acts, Stripe “automatically submits the pre-filled evidence packet just before the dispute times out” [SD1]. A merchant who learns what was argued only after the deadline has no chance to add the receipt or the delivery photo that would have won it. Stripe puts the window to respond at usually 7 to 21 days, depending on the card network. Forward the notice when it arrives and the response is back within 48 hours, with time to read it and add what is missing before the deadline [SD5].
A fixed price instead of 30% of every win
Stripe charges 30% of the disputed amount on each dispute Smart Disputes wins [SD3]. On an $1,800 dispute that is $540. Fight, in our Stripe app, sends a response to every dispute from $49 a month, priced by your average order value, and the bill stays the same however much you win back.
What Stripe merchants say
Smart Disputes is a Stripe feature, not an app, so it has no ratings on G2, Trustpilot or any app store. The fullest merchant discussion we found is on Reddit’s r/stripe, where a February 2026 post worked through the fees and Stripe’s own team replied.
“Smart Disputes saves you $15 on losses but costs 10x more on wins.”
u/No-Translator-9322, r/stripe, 19 February 2026 [SD6]. Stripe’s team replied in the thread on 15 July 2026 that “You only pay the Smart Disputes fee when you win.”
“I’ve lost every dispute in the past. This is why this is so surprising lol.”
u/letsprogramnow, r/stripe, 5 August 2025, after winning a dispute that Smart Disputes had answered automatically [SD7].
Who should use which
Smart Disputes suits a Stripe merchant with small disputes, rich order and delivery data already in Stripe, and no time to look at a dispute at all; it costs nothing on a loss and can be left on [SD3]. representments.com suits a merchant with disputes of several hundred dollars or more whose best evidence sits outside Stripe, who wants an argument written for the bank deciding the case, and who wants it within 48 hours of forwarding the dispute.
