Should I refund or fight a chargeback? Compare the fees

Refund or fight a chargeback: refund when it costs less than the fees and your evidence is thin, fight when you hold proof that answers the claim.

Updated 25 October 2026.

Refund before a dispute opens when the refund costs less than losing would, and fight only when you hold proof that answers the claim. On Stripe in the US, a contested dispute costs $15 when it arrives and another $15 to counter, and only the second fee comes back on a win.

What does a lost dispute cost on Stripe?

A lost dispute costs the order plus both fees. A US merchant on Stripe who contests a $40 dispute and loses pays the $40 order, $15 when the dispute arrives and a further $15 for countering it.

Stripe's June 2025 pricing change added that second $15 to every contested dispute. The countered fee comes back if you win, but the received fee is never returned, outside Mexico and unless your contract says otherwise.

Contesting a $40 dispute therefore puts a further $15 at risk for a chance of recovering the $40 order. Write that sum down for your own average order before deciding.

Why does timing decide your options?

Before a dispute opens you have every option, including a refund that costs only the goods. While a dispute is open, Stripe says you cannot refund outside the dispute process, and accepting the dispute does not avoid the received fee.

After it opens, the only choices are to contest or to accept the loss, and both carry the $15. On a $40 order, a refund was worth up to $15 more before the customer called the bank than after.

Early fraud warnings sharpen the same point. Stripe says about 40% of Visa and Mastercard early fraud warnings become fraud disputes if the charge is not refunded, and it suggests refunding warned charges at or below roughly the dispute fee. A $12 order sits in that range, while a $300 order backed by a signed delivery record and a login history is worth contesting, so sort your warnings by order value as they arrive.

Do other processors return the fee on a win?

Whether the fee comes back differs by processor, and merchants often assume otherwise. Shopify Payments charges $15 in the US and says the fee is returned on a win, while another Shopify help page says it might be refunded depending on country or region.

PayPal's US fee page, updated 1 October 2026, lists a $20.00 chargeback fee for card chargebacks outside PayPal-account flows. The page does not say whether it is returned on a win.

Pay-later orders have their own cheap exit. For Klarna through Stripe, a full refund during the inquiry avoids any dispute fee, which makes the choice easy for any order that is plainly refundable. Check your own processor's fee page before building a spreadsheet around the idea that a win is free.

When should you fight instead of refund?

Fight when your records answer the claim directly and the order is large enough that losing it hurts more than the second fee. Stripe names the records that count:

  • for a non-receipt claim, shipping proof showing the delivery date and full delivery address;
  • for digital goods, the IP address or system logs proving download or use.

Refund without a fight when the order is at or below the fee, when the customer's claim is true, or when the case is a pay-later inquiry that a full refund closes. Where records are partial and the amount is moderate, refund, because a dispute you expect to lose costs the goods plus the fees while a refund costs only the goods.

The evidence side of the call is worked through in should I refund or fight this chargeback. Give your support lead this rule in writing and apply it on the day the warning or complaint arrives.

Takeaway: what to do this week

  1. Work out your break-even order value. On Stripe in the US, compare each order against the $15 received fee and the $15 countered fee.
  2. Refund small warned charges early. Stripe suggests refunding early fraud warnings at or below roughly the dispute fee, before they become disputes.
  3. Contest only with matching proof. Delivery date and full address for non-receipt, or download and use logs for digital goods.
  4. Record the reason in every ticket. Next quarter's review can then show how many refunds were avoidable and how many contests were worth the fee.
