PayPal dispute or card chargeback: which deadline comes first?

A PayPal dispute can be filed for 180 days but give you as few as 2 to respond, so PayPal deadlines often come before card chargeback ones.

Updated 25 October 2026.

A PayPal dispute and a card chargeback run on different clocks: PayPal customers can dispute for up to 180 days against a typical 120 for cards, yet PayPal can give you as few as 2 days to send evidence, so read every PayPal notice the day it arrives.

How long does each side get?

PayPal gives the customer longer to file and can give you less time to respond. Stripe's documentation on disputed PayPal payments says a customer can dispute for up to 180 calendar days from purchase. The same page says merchant evidence is due in 2 to 19 days, depending on the category.

Card networks typically allow 120 days to dispute, and Stripe says the merchant usually has 7 to 21 days to respond. On filing, PayPal gives the customer 60 more days than a card does. On responding, PayPal can give you as few as 2, so a calendar built around card timings is likely to miss the PayPal deadline.

Keep PayPal and card cases in the same list, sorted by due date.

Which card deadline is the real one?

The real deadline is the one your processor sets, and it is usually the shortest. Stripe says the issuer takes 60 to 75 days to decide, so the whole card cycle takes 2 to 3 months. Behind the processor's window sits the network's.

Visa's Core Rules (section 11.3, edition of 18 April 2026) require the acquirer's dispute response within 30 calendar days of the dispute processing date. Processors take a share of that time for themselves. Adyen, for example, gives merchants 9 days to respond to a Visa chargeback on US and Canadian local payments for disputes from 21 July 2025, and 18 days otherwise.

Put the processor's date in the diary, never the network's. The reasoning is set out in why the chargeback deadline can be 7 days.

How is a PayPal dispute handled differently?

A PayPal payment goes through PayPal's own dispute process. That is why Stripe says it adds no fee to PayPal disputes and that appeals happen at PayPal. PayPal aims to decide within 30 days of receiving evidence.

Customers can also go through their funding bank, which brings the card rules back into play. A single order can therefore produce either a PayPal claim or a card chargeback. The notice and the evidence form look different, and the evidence categories are PayPal's.

Before reading any deadline, check which of the two you are holding. Because the 2-to-19-day window varies by category, read the category on the notice as well.

What does a PayPal dispute cost, and can you avoid it?

PayPal's US merchant fees page, last updated 1 October 2026, lists a $20.00 chargeback fee, a $15.00 standard dispute fee and a $30.00 High Volume dispute fee for PayPal-account transactions. The page does not say whether those fees come back on a win. Check the fee page in your own account before assuming the costs match a card dispute.

One PayPal option has nothing like it on the card side. PayPal's developer documentation says a merchant can refund within 20 hours of a pre-chargeback alert without fulfilling the order, which avoids the chargeback and its fees.

Twenty hours leaves little room, so the decision belongs to whoever is online when the alert arrives. If the order was going to be refunded in the end, that window is the cheapest moment to do it.

Takeaway: what to do this week

  1. Keep one disputes calendar sorted by deadline. Record the date each notice arrived, the processor's evidence due date and the PayPal or network window behind it, then work from the earliest.
  2. Set PayPal reminders from the notice date. A 2-day window leaves no time to look for the notice later.
  3. Decide who acts on PayPal pre-chargeback alerts. A refund within 20 hours avoids the chargeback and its fees.
  4. Read the PayPal fee page in your account. PayPal's own page does not say whether the $20.00, $15.00 or $30.00 fees come back on a win.
