On Visa, Stripe charges $15.00 to resolve a dispute through its dispute prevention tools, the same as its $15 dispute fee. Alerts pay for themselves only when a resolved dispute keeps you under a ratio you are close to breaching, or when Order Insight can block a dispute outright.
What does an alert cost compared with a dispute?
On Visa, an alert costs the same cash as a dispute you lose. Stripe's pricing page lists dispute prevention at $15.00 for each Visa dispute resolved and $29.00 for each Mastercard one. Stripe's US dispute received fee is $15, and it is non-refundable.
A $25 Visa order resolved through an alert costs $25 for the refund and $15 for the resolution, and the same order lost as an unanswered dispute costs $25 and $15.
On cash alone, then, the alert does not beat the dispute, and the case for buying one rests on what a resolved dispute stops counting. Check the dispute prevention line on Stripe's pricing page before you sign up for anything.
When does the ratio saving matter?
The saving only matters if you are near a network threshold. Stripe says disputes resolved through RDR do not count toward dispute rates and carry no separate dispute-received fee. Visa's VAMP fact sheet (VAMP is Visa's monitoring programme for fraud and disputes) excludes disputes resolved through pre-dispute solutions from the ratio.
For Mastercard, Stripe says disputes resolved through Ethoca Alerts do not count toward the ECM, HECM or EFM programs. From 1 April 2026, VAMP's Excessive threshold is 1.5% in the US, Canada, Europe and Asia Pacific. It applies only to merchants with at least 1,500 fraud and dispute events a month.
A merchant at 0.4% gets nothing from the exclusion, and neither does one below 1,500 events. A merchant at 1.3% and climbing, with more than 1,500 events a month, gets a good deal, because each resolved dispute is one fewer event in the count. Compare your figures with what Visa and Mastercard each measure before paying.
Which alert fits which kind of store?
The right alert depends on order value and repeat rate. RDR is the most automatic of the group: you set rules, such as an amount ceiling, and matching Visa disputes are credited to the cardholder before a chargeback exists. Stripe says RDR resolves only disputes for the full original amount on a transaction that has not been refunded, so partial disputes and double-refund cases pass straight through.
RDR suits a catalogue of low-priced items you would refund anyway. For larger disputes worth contesting, a rule at under $10, the example Stripe gives, concedes cases you might have won.
CDRN, from Verifi, gives you a 72-hour window to credit the cardholder before the chargeback is filed. Ethoca covers Mastercard. Both depend on someone acting on each notice, so staff for that window first.
Order Insight is the only tool in the set that can end a dispute by winning it. The issuer looks up purchase details while the cardholder is on the phone or in the bank's app. If 2 or more prior transactions on the card have complete product descriptions with matching IP addresses and at least one matching email or delivery address, the issuer must block the dispute before it is filed.
That suits repeat-customer businesses such as a subscription box or a consumables brand, while a one-time buyer gives it nothing to match. Large single orders suit none of these tools, because the money is in contesting the dispute.
How do early fraud warnings fit in?
Early fraud warnings are a separate signal. Stripe says about 40% of Visa and Mastercard early fraud warnings become fraud disputes if not refunded. A refund removes the fraud report only when processed as a reversal, usually within about 2 hours of capture.
Watch for early fraud warnings as they arrive, so a reversal is still possible when you decide to refund.
Takeaway: what to do this week
- Check your ratio and event count. If you are well below 1.5% or under 1,500 Visa events a month, an alert buys you no ratio saving.
- Re-read the Stripe price line. Compare the $15.00 Visa resolution price with the $15 dispute fee.
- Match the tool to your customers. Repeat buyers suit Order Insight; cheap orders near a threshold suit RDR and Ethoca.
- Act on early fraud warnings quickly. A refund removes the fraud report only as a reversal, usually within about 2 hours of capture.
